Theuseofintelligentmaterialswhicharecapableofreactingtoexternalstimuliisgrowinginmanyfields.Especially,functionalmaterialsbasedonrenewablebioresourcesandenwronmentallyfriendlyprocesseshaveattractedconsiderableattention.Byusingalkaline/ureaaqueoussolutionasasolvent,ahomogeneousdispersionofmulti-walledcarbonnanotubes(CNTs)andcelluloseinaqueoussystemwasobtained.ItprovidesaplatformtoprepareCNT/cellulosecompositessuchasfilms,fibres,foamsandsoon,throughasimple,efficientandenvironmentalfriendlyprocess.TheCNT/cellulosecompositefilmsfabricatedfromthisprocessareflexibleandhavethepotentialasbio-basedmaterials.UniformdispersionofCNTs,incombinationwithfavourableCNT-cellulosematrixinteraction,causesthebetterductilityandhighertoughnessofthematerials,aswellastheenhancedthermalstability.ThenetworkformationoftheCNTsincellulosematrixnotonlyintroducedgoodconductivitytothematerials,butalsoledtotheimpressivemultifunctionalsensingabilitiestotensilestrain,temperatureandenvironmentalhumidity.Especially,thefractionalresistanceofthecompositefilmsexhibitshighlylinearandrepeatablecorrelationtotensilestrain,indicatingtheirexcellentsensingabilityasstraingages.Furthermore,theseelectricallyconductiveCNT-cellulosecompositefilmscanserveashighlysensitive,wellreversibleandreproduciblesensorsforliquidwater,whichcanbewidelyusedinmanyfieldssuchasdetectionofwaterleakagesandwatercontentdetermination.Ontheotherhand,italsooffersapotentialwaytoinvestigatetheswellingmechanismofcellulose-basedmaterialsinliquidwaterandorganicsolvents.
